www.desitalk.com – that’s all you need to know 10 CITY VIEWS May 15, 2026 Queens Community Celebrates Mother’s Day And National Nurses Week At Elmhurst Hospital A rts4All Foundation, in collaboration with GPK Foundation Americas, hosted a special Mother’s Day and National NursesWeek celebration May 8 at NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst, bringing to- gether healthcare professionals, elected officials, community leaders and local residents for an evening honoring mothers and frontline medical workers. The event highlighted the contributions of Elmhurst Hospital’s nurses, physicians and healthcare staff who continue to serve one of the most diverse communities in NewYork City. Organizers said the program was designed to recognize the dedication, compassion and sacrifices of healthcare workers, particularly women serving on the frontlines of patient care. The celebration featured speeches from hospital leadership, elected officials and community representa- tives, along with cultural performances, poetry, music and dance reflecting the diversity of Queens. Guests also participated in a Mother’s Day cake-cutting ceremony, a silk flower-making workshop and community activities including face painting and entertainment. “It is truly an honor to celebrate Mother’s Day with our local community,” said Alina Moran, CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst. She praised the hospital’s medi- cal staff for their continued commitment to delivering compassionate and high-quality healthcare services to Queens residents. Dr. Sumita SenGupta, founder of Arts4All Founda- tion and organizer of the celebration, said the event was intended to honor healthcare workers whose service and resilience continue to strengthen families and communi- ties. She noted that many healthcare professionals often work through holidays and personal milestones while caring for patients and supporting public health efforts. As part of the celebration, Arts4All Foundation orga- nized the distribution of more than 1,000 Mother’s Day gifts, including flowers, chocolates, beauty products and wellness items for hospital staff and members of the community. Assemblywoman Catalina Cruz and Councilwoman Shanel Thomas-Henry attended the event and recognized the important role mothers, caregivers and healthcare workers play in supporting families and communities across Queens. Dinner and desserts for the celebration were do- nated by several local restaurants and businesses, while community performers presented musical and cultural performances throughout the evening. T he Indian Nurses Association of NewYork (INANY) hosted its an- nual Nurses Day celebration May 9 at the NewYork Kerala Center in Elmont, bringing together nurses, healthcare professionals and community members to honor the dedication and service of the nursing community. Led by INANY President Shlya Roshin, a Doctor of Nursing Practice, registered nurse and clinical nurse specialist, the event focused on recognizing the com- passion, resilience and contributions of nurses serving communities across New York. Organizers described the gathering as a celebration of the “heart behind the profession,” featuring guest speak- ers, entertainment, fellowship, food and prize presentations. RN Leonard Achan, president and CEO of LiveOnNY, attended as chief guest. Achan, a veteran healthcare executive with more than two decades of leadership experience, addressed attendees during the program. Among the elected officials and dig- nitaries present were NewYork Assem- blymembers Edward C. Braunstein and Michaelle C. Solages, Nassau County Leg- islator Carrié Solages and North Hemp- stead Town Clerk Ragini Srivastava. NewYork attorney general candi- date Saritha Komatireddy also attended the event and praised nurses for their continued service and commitment to patient care. Komatireddy highlighted the challenges faced by healthcare workers, including long working hours and safety concerns in hospitals. She noted the important role nurses play on the frontlines of healthcare and thanked them for serving NewYorkers with compassion and dedication. Organizers said INANY hosts the an- nual event to recognize nurses for their commitment to healthcare and commu- nity service. International Nurses Day is observed annually on May 12 to honor nurses worldwide and commemorates the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, con- sidered the founder of modern nursing.
